The Elman Rapid Induction…Required learning for all hypnotists

orange-brain-12kDave Elman’s Rapid Induction is one of the best inductions out there. Famed for it’s rapid speed, built in testing and ease of achieving somnambulism.

1. Begin induction:
Have the subject get comfortable. Take a deep breath in and as you exhale close your eyes and imagine all tension leaving your body and relax completely. Pass your hand over their eyes. If they close their eyes before you tell them, start again (They have to follow your instructions). Ask them to place your awareness on the muscles around your eyes to the point that they don’t want to work. When they are happy that you have the muscles so relaxed that they won’t work, test them to prove that they won’t work.

You should see their eyebrows moving and their eyes remain closed. If they open their eyes, ask them to close them and prove to themselves, that they can relax them to the point that they won’t work. Then ask them to test again. If the eyes stay closed after testing for a couple of seconds, say good, I want you to send that feeling of relaxation from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. Look for signs of relaxation.

2. Fractionation:
In a moment I’m going to ask you to open and close your eyes. On closing your eyes allow yourself to go ten times deeper into relaxation. Open and close. That’s it ten times deeper. Really let go now and relax completely. That’s it. Again pass the hand over the eyes on closing
Repeat fractionation (deepening by exiting and re-entering trance) process by opening and closing their eyes twice more with suggestions to relax twice as deep on each occasion.

3. The test for relaxation:
Now that you have relaxed your body, I’m going to lift your arm by the wrist and drop it in your lap and in doing so you can go even deeper into relaxation.Take hold of the wrist and lift the arm. I don’t want you to help me lift your arm. Just let it hang their loose and limp like a wet dish rag.
If they help you, tell them not to. What you are looking for is for the arm to be a dead weight.

If they still haven’t relaxed sufficiently, just do the fractionation again or do a simple count down deepener with suggestion to double their relaxation with each count. Then test the arm for relaxation again. Now it should be relaxed and a few repeated lifts of the hand of the lap and dropping of the hand with suggestions to deepen the relaxation each time, should compound the relaxation sufficiently for the next step. Test for relaxation again.

4. Somnabulism
That great you’re doing so well, now that you have relaxed your body I now want you to relax your mind.
In a moment I’m going to ask you to begin slowly counting backwards out loud from 100 to say 97 and say the words deeper relaxed. Now if you double your mental relaxation with each number and let your mind become twice as relaxed each time, the numbers will fade away. You will have relaxed them out of your mind. I can’t do this for you. Want it to happen and it will happen for you.
Begin by counting backwards from 100 out loud.
Subject: 100 Deeper relaxed.
That’s it, double that mental relaxation.
Subject 99 Deeper relaxed.
Slow it down a little (If too fast) and keep doubling that mental relaxation. Start to let those numbers fade away. Dim dark and distant. That’s it.
Subject 98 Deeper relaxed.
Keep doubling that relaxation. Let them fade away. Dim dark and distant. Banish them from your mind now. Are they all gone?

Subject usually nods that they are gone. The subject will be in somnambulism as he had amnesia for the numbers. Test with them for somnambulism by getting them to forget their name. Just deepen them further and proceed with chosen therapy.

You need to be sure that they have actual amnesia, as they may be too relaxed to say anything (artificial somnambulism)or they may be saying what they think you want to hear. Make sure, with tests for amnesia.

The Elman induction is my induction of choice for doing regression work. In fact any hypnotherapy session, as I feel it gets results.

Important tip: Some times a person will not banish the numbers. I once had a drummer who hung on to the numbers as his playing involved them, so i switched to losing letters instead. Accountants will also hold onto the numbers.

Sometime the person is so analytical (conscious mind too active). Get them to say the alphabet backwards with suggestions of them fading away instead. This is a lot harder to do, so suggestions to let them fade away and go deep into trance are complied with. Trance is the easier of the two to deal with.

Another method that I have used to achieve amnesia, is to say: in a moment I’m going to pick up your hand and drop it in your lap, as your hand touches your lap, for this session only, the numbers will be gone from your mind, and you can allow yourself to relax even deeper. Then ask if they are all gone. Artificial somnabulism is when the numbers are not actually gone. They are just agreeing with you, or to relaxed to say anything.
